5 Ways to Reduce Workplace Stress

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s common to feel overwhelmed, and a demanding work schedule is one factor that may significantly increase stress levels. According to Statistics Canada, almost a quarter of employees experience high or very high work-related stress. Unfortunately, stress that persists for a long time can negatively impact physical and mental health.

April is Stress Awareness Month, making now the perfect time to evaluate your mental well-being. Celebrate this month-long observance by considering the following tips to reduce workplace stress:

  1. Be realistic. Make a list to prioritize your work, set realistic deadlines and have an alternative plan in case things don’t go as planned. Try to be kind to yourself; no one is perfect. Speak to your manager if you’re finding work tasks difficult.
  2. Focus on what you can control. Don’t feel pressured to take on too much, as this can be counterproductive. Break any larger tasks into smaller, more manageable steps. Try to think tasks through before jumping in and begin with a result in mind.
  3. Limit interruptions. Use your voicemail to your advantage and only take priority calls when you have a tight deadline. Set aside designated times throughout the day to respond to emails and phone calls.
  4. Take a break. To release stress, take a short break. Walking or discussing your work situation with another person may help you gain a fresh perspective. Additionally, a few days off or an extended weekend may help you feel refreshed, so always take your allotted vacation entitlement.
  5. Maintain boundaries. Avoid taking your computer home or checking emails at home if you can. If you work remotely, have a designated workspace and stick to a routine to help you transition in and out of your workdays.

Speak to your supervisor or a health professional if stress-reduction measures aren’t helping.
